Frequently Asked Questions

A dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, or Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) assessment is a diagnostic evaluation conducted by a qualified specialist. It looks at areas such as reading, writing, memory, processing speed and attention to understand how a person learns and whether a learning difference may be present.

My Kind of Thinking offers assessments for teenagers, university students and adults. Many adults choose to have an assessment later in life to better understand long-standing learning or attention difficulties.

Common signs include:

  • Difficulty with reading, spelling or writing
  • Slow reading or processing information
  • Problems with organisation or memory
  • Difficulty concentrating or sustaining attention

An assessment can help identify whether dyslexia or another SpLD may be affecting learning.

The assessment involves a series of structured activities that explore reading, writing, memory, reasoning, and processing skills. The process is supportive and designed to build a clear picture of how the individual learns.

A full diagnostic dyslexia or SpLD assessment usually takes around 2.5-3 hours, depending on the individual’s age and the type of assessment.

We have used My Kind of Thinking to complete assessments for our students for the last 4 years. Our students find the assessment process a positive experience and Alice always takes the time to talk through the outcomes with us, and we have been able to use the recommendations to help our students as they progress through their courses with us.

I just wanted to say thank you again. I was worried about how I would stay focused for so long during the assessment, but you were easy to understand, professional, and willing to listen.
