Full Diagnostic Assessments for University Students

Much of our experience at My Kind of Thinking comes from the significant number of students we assess and work with each year.

Our assessment process is efficient, with a significant amount of information gathered before the assessment day. Each assessment takes approximately 2.5 – 3  hours to complete. We look at areas such as underlying abilitycognitive skills such as working memory and speeds of processing, along with reading, spelling and writing skills. We may also investigate other Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) like dyspraxia (DCD) and ADHD, depending on the background information we collect.

As part of the assessment we want to find out how you performed in the past, what you currently enjoy and the things you struggle with. By taking a holistic approach we are able to provide a detailed report with bespoke recommendations to support you at university.

If there is sufficient evidence to suggest that your difficulties are consistent with a SpLD, you can use your report to apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). This government funded support offers fully funded 1:1 specialist tuition, assistive technology software and help towards the cost of a laptop (if required).

We are now also able to offer remote assessments

In March 2021 we were given the go ahead by our professional body to offer remote full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD for students and adults. These assessments offer the full comprehensive range of tests as our face-to-face assessments covering areas such as cognitive processes, reading, writing and spelling.  The reports produced from the assessments can be used as evidence for students applying for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). In addition, these reports can be used in the workplace, or other situation where an individual may be required to show evidence of an additional learning need.

Before assessment, you need to have:

  • Had a recent sight test (under 2 years). Note: sight tests are free until the end of your 18th year while you are in full-time education
  • Completed the booking form and visual screening sheet sent to you in full. It is worth talking to a parent/carer to find out about any developmental milestones you might have missed as a child.
